While chlorine is used in pools to prevent the growth of bacteria and the spread of possible infections, it is also a highly toxic chemical that can trigger severe reactions. As a result, some people may experience allergy-like symptoms during or after a swim.

Allergy Symptoms Caused by Swimming

Rash

Most people who have an allergic reaction to chlorine will develop a rash on the groin area and under the armpits upon exiting a swimming pool.

Shortness Of Breath

One of the most serious symptoms one can experience from a chlorine allergy is shortness of breath or tightness in the chest, similar to that of an asthma attack.

Irritated Eyes

Less threatening symptoms associated with chlone allergies can be found in the form of burning, itchy or swollen eyes after swimming.

Coughing Or Sneezing

Extensive bouts of sneezing and coughing, not to mention a stuffy and itchy nose, can signal an allergic reaction to chlorine.

Dry Or Painful Skin

Extremely dry skin may also indicate a chlorine allergy, particularly when the skin becomes tender to the touch.
