How to Start a Cover Letter With No Salutation

A cover letter is the first piece of correspondence a future employer will receive from you, so you want to put forth an extra effort to find out who the letter should go to.

There can be cases, however, where you simply cannot find the name of the person to address the letter to. If that is the case, there is still proper etiquette to follow.

7 Steps to Start a Cover Letter With No Salutation

Cover Letter With No Salutation

1. Type your contact information first.

This includes your return address and phone number. Return two single spaces.

123 Main Street
Anywhere, CA 12345
123-456-7891

2. Type the current date. Return two single spaces.

June 7, 2010

3. Type the inside address.

This is the address of the letter’s recipient. Include their name (if known), title (if known), company, and business address. Return two single spaces.

Company XYZ
456 Main Street
Anywhere, CA 12345

4. Now you would normally type your salutation.

If you have tried to call the company to find out the individual’s name to address the letter to and have had no luck, you can choose to do one of the following.

Type “Director of Human Resources for (Insert Company Name Here).” Or, you can leave the salutation blank and just include the subject of the letter “Re: Job Offer 123.” All references say to not use the standard “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom it May Concern” on a cover letter because they sound like a form response. Return two single spaces.

5. Type the body of the letter.

Include a single space in the paragraphs and a double space between paragraphs. At the end of the body return two single spaces.

6. Write the complimentary close.

Most people use “Sincerely” followed by a comma. Return four single spaces to leave enough room for the signature.

Sincerely,

7. Type the signature block.

This includes your typed name and title (optional). Sign your name in the space above if the letter is printed and sent via mail.

Mr John Doe
