Tips to Lower Calories of Potato Dishes

A lot of people avoid the potato when they are dieting and trying to lose weight. Its not without reason either, potatoes are a complex starch that becomes sucrose very easily and can be stored as fat.

Starches are a type of carb that is good for storing fat.

Not exactly the type of thing you might want to eat if you’re trying to seriously lose weight. But I want to encourage the consumption of the potato because paired with good things and eaten in moderation the potato can be a good filling carb for any meal.

The potato was originally cultivated in the new world by the Aztecs and Mayans. It was then brought back to Europe and became common due to its cheap cost.

The potato quickly became common throughout Europe and became a staple in the European diet.

The History of Potato

The nice thing about the potato is that it can be paired with anything. Vegetables and meat are favorites but really potatoes are very versatile. If you’re doing mashed potatoes use no trans-fat butter and low fat milk with a little cheese for flavor.

If you’re doing hash browns fry them in olive oil to save on calories. If you baking potatoes (the healthiest way to prepare them) leave the cheese, sour cream, chives, and butter off and just use salt and pepper or low fat butter.

It is a well known fact that including the skin of the potato is very important for nutrition and taking advantages of all the nutrients in the potato. There are also several varieties of potato that you can prepare. There are russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, white potatoes and many more.

Don’t be afraid of experiment with different kinds especially paired with large meats.

So lets enjoy the lowly potato and prepare it with love.
