1. Obtain a certified copy of your spouse’s death certificate.
Before you can to cash a check from your deceased spouse, you will need a copy of her death certificate to show the bank.
2. Have written proof that you are the deceased’s spouse.
The bank may ask you to show a copy of your marriage license and photo ID prior to cashing the check.
3. Use a copy of the will to show your entitlement to the money.
If the bank or the issuing party has questions about whether you are entitled to your spouse’s money, you may need to produce a copy of his will prior to cashing the check.
4. Ask the executor of your spouse’s will to cash the check for you.
If your spouse has not named you the executor to her will, consider asking the executor to cash the check and distribute the funds to you. The executor will have documentation about his right to the decedent’s funds to which you may not have access.
5. If the bank refuses to cash a check in your deceased spouse’s name, request that it reissue the check in your own name.
