How to Choose Baby Girl Names

Choosing baby girl names is not easy. You have nine months to choose, and sometimes even that doesn’t seem like long enough! Here are some ideas for getting started selecting a name for your new baby girl.

Things You’ll Need

  • Notebook, pen
  • Internet access
  • Bookstore visit

5 Steps to Choose Baby Girl Names

Baby Girl Names

1. The first thing you are going to want to do is purchase a small notebook (would pink be perfect?!)

So you can start collecting the names you’ll be considering for your baby girl.

2. Consider family names first.

Make a list (easier if you have access to family trees) of first, middle and sometimes even last names that have been used throughout the histories of your families.

3. Find your style.

Do you like old names? New names? Trendy? Traditional? It’s easier to narrow down choices if both parents have a similar TYPE of name they like. The top 25 baby girl names for 2019 in ranking order are: Emma, Ava, Olivia, Isabella, Madison, Abigail, Sophia, Emily, Chloe, Addison, Ella, Lily, Grace, Mia, Alexis, Hannah, Samantha, Elizabeth, Taylor, Avery, Natalie, Alyssa, Riley, Anna, and Claire.

4. Write in your pink notebook often- keep it close at hand.

You never know when you’re going to hear a name you like- we named our first girl Sarah Grace, and when I was 7 months pregnant with my second daughter we went to a Ruby Tuesday for dinner and the waitress said “Hi, my name is Molly and I’ll be your waitress” my husband and I looked at each other and knew we just heard our baby girl’s name!

After Molly Anne, we had a third daughter, Faith Eleanor. All three of our daughters have first names we chose and middle names that are old family names.

5. Search bookstores and the internet.

There are at least ten or more websites dedicated specifically to the naming of baby girls- simply Google ‘baby girl names’ and you’ll be overwhelmed and reaching for that pink notebook! Same with bookstores- spend some time in one paging through baby girl name books and add to your list of choices.

Tips & Warnings
Let the top contender ‘names’ sit on a special list in your notebook for awhile so you have time to think about them before making a final choice!
