Michigan is chock full of fun and relaxing places to visit in the summer. From the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan to the quaint cities along the way, this state offers many varieties of things to do. Here are five places that will make your summer vacation even better.
1. Beaver Island
This popular vacation spot is the largest island in Lake Michigan. Rent a cottage, take the kids to the Toy Museum or walk along the harbor to view the lighthouse. You will have to either fly or take a ferry to this remote place but once there, you will have a quiet, safe and relaxed environment to enjoy your vacation.
2. Michigan Adventure
This is Michigan’s largest water and amusement park and is loads of fun, especially for kids. If you like living in the fast lane, there is the shivering timbers roller coaster for you. If you are a water freak, Wildwater Adventure may be the ticket for fun. There is definitely something for everyone. The park is located just north of Muskegon.
3. Mackinac Island
The Victorian charm of this popular resort area is what attracts thousands of visitors each year. No motor vehicles are allowed. You can travel by bicycle, on foot or the favorite horse-drawn carriage. There are many activities to keep the family busy.
The state park is lovely to visit and arch rock is said to be really cool. For nature lovers, take a horseback ride to view the sights or take a visit to the butterfly house. Be sure to pick up some famous Mackinaw fudge before you leave! Mackinac Island is located in Northern Michigan, situated in the Straits connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
4. Sleeping Bear Dunes
Sleeping Bear Dunes was named the Most Beautiful Place in American in 2011 for a reason. Its serene beaches and 35 miles of shoreline seems to be untouched. The sand dunes seem to be sculpted just for visitors to take in. I was able to see just a few minutes of this magnificent view on my way home from my honeymoon a few years back. This is one place I would definitely want to spend more time visiting.
5. Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village
For history buffs, or if you just want to take your kids on a day trip for an adventure, the Henry Ford Museum is a great place to do just that. It is located in Dearborn, MI. Many artifacts and history of inventions will capture the past.
Greenfield village will also take you back in time to discover things you may not have known about inventors such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
