Narcissus is a character from Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection in a pond. He was so transfixed with his own image that he fell into the water and drowned. Psychology uses the character in this myth to illustrate the behavior exhibited by narcissistic personality disorder.

The risks involved with dating a narcissistic person might outweigh the benefits. But some personality traits present themselves early in the dating process, giving you a chance to end a potentially unhealthy relationship.

4 Steps To Detect A Narcissist On A Date

Detect a Narcissist on a Date

1. Educate Yourself On The Classic Traits Of A Narcissist

One major trait of a narcissist is an over inflated self-image that acts as a cover for deeper insecurity. This manifests itself as a tendency to be easily hurt when rejected or a track record of unhealthy relationships.

2. Listen To Your Date's Conversation

If she is always changing the subject to focus on herself, this could be one of the first signs of narcissistic behavior.

3. Watch Your Date's Behavior Toward You

The emotions of a narcissist will run hot then cold toward another person. If your date appears unemotional about something that involves himself one moment, but becomes emotional the next, this is a narcissistic trait.

4. Ask Your Date About Past Relationships And Listen Closely To His Replies

A date that degrades past relationships, and paints himself as the hero in all circumstances, could be revealing a narcissistic trait.
