Beach Vacation Packing List for Families

Packing for a beach vacation with kids feels like you're preparing for an expedition to a remote location rather than a trip to the beach. You're trying to anticipate every possible need while also traveling with sandy, wet, cranky humans. The result is often overpacking everything because you're terrified of forgetting something essential.

Here's the truth: you can buy most things at your destination. Sunscreen? Available. Beach toys? Easy to find. That specific snack your child loves? Probably there. Give yourself permission to travel lighter than you think. And for the things you absolutely need, here's a complete list.

Clothing (But Not As Much As You Think)

For everyone:

  • Enough clothes for the trip plus one extra outfit (laundry works)
  • Underwear (again, laundry exists)
  • Pajamas
  • One jacket or sweater for air-conditioned places
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • One pair of nicer sandals or shoes
  • Socks (for air conditioning, flights, etc.)
  • Beachwear: swimsuits (multiple for everyone), cover-ups, beach shirts

Specific considerations:

  • Rash guards for kids who burn easily
  • Clothes appropriate to non-beach activities if you're doing any
  • Workout clothes if exercising

Toiletries and Personal Items

Bring from home:

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste (small amounts)
  • Prescription medications
  • Any personal care items you prefer (specific deodorant, skincare, etc.)
  • Razor and shaving cream if needed

Buy at destination: Shampoo and conditioner, Body wash, Lotion, Face wash, and Hair styling products.

Universal items: Sunscreen (SPF 30+, broad spectrum), Lip balm with SPF, Deodorant, Feminine hygiene products if needed, Medications (allergy medicine, pain reliever, etc.), Aloe vera (for sunburns), Bandages, and Any required prescriptions.

Beach-Specific Items

Sun and sand protection: Sunscreen (bring enough for the first few days), After-sun lotion or aloe, Sun hats or visors for everyone, Sunglasses, Beach towels (often provided at hotels), Beach bag, and Waterproof sunscreen container.

Water protection: Rash guards or swim shirts, Swim diapers if applicable, Water shoes (helpful on rocky beaches), Towel to dry off, and Quick-dry clothing.

Sand and water toys: - These are widely available and inexpensive at the beach. Skip them or buy locally.

Kids-Specific Items

Baby/toddler items: Diapers (bring some, buy the rest locally), Wipes (bring some), Diaper rash cream, Car seat if renting a car, and Portable crib if not provided by accommodation.

Feeding items:

  • High chair if not provided
  • Any special foods your child requires
  • Bottles, formula, sterilization supplies if needed

Entertainment and comfort: A few favorite toys, Comfort item (stuffed animal, blanket), Books or e-reader, and Travel games.

Tech and Documents

Essential documents: IDs (driver's license, passport if relevant), Insurance cards, Hotel/accommodation confirmation, Rental car confirmation, Flight confirmations, Vaccination records if traveling internationally, and Pediatrician contact information.

Tech items: Phone and charger, Any device chargers, Portable charger, Headphones or earbuds, and Downloaded content (entertainment for kids or adults).

Food and Snacks

Bring:

  • Snacks you know your kids will eat
  • Any special dietary items
  • Medications that need to be taken with food

Buy locally: - Most food and snacks

At the beach:

  • Water (bring refillable bottles)
  • Snacks for the beach
  • Lunch items if not eating at restaurants

Practical Items

Organization:

  • Packing cubes or bins to organize items
  • A bag for wet/sandy items separate from clean clothes
  • Ziploc bags (waterproofing phones, organizing items)
  • Trash bags

Daily necessities: Phone chargers, Headphones, Refillable water bottles, Cooler (if bringing your own food), Sunglasses, and A small backpack for daily beach trips.

Clothing Strategy to Minimize Packing

Pack less, wash more: Plan to do laundry mid-stay rather than packing for every day.

Neutral colors: Clothes that match reduce the need for quantity.

Versatile pieces: Items that work multiple ways (shorts worn as a swimsuit cover-up, light shirt worn over swimsuit, etc.).

Quality over quantity: Better-made clothes that work well for a week beat numerous mediocre pieces.

Optional But Helpful

Entertainment: Audiobooks or podcasts for travel, Downloaded movies or shows, Books for adults, and Travel games.

Comfort:

  • Your favorite pillow from home (helps with sleep)
  • Comfort item if traveling with significant others
  • Any items that help you relax

Photography:

  • Good phone camera or actual camera
  • Waterproof phone case if you'll be in/near water

What NOT to Pack

Large items: Beach towels, beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers are available at the destination or can be borrowed.

Excessive clothing: You don't need a different outfit for each day if you plan laundry.

Books and heavy reading: Digital options are lighter.

Most toiletries: Buy locally; save suitcase space.

Toys: Buy or borrow locally; they take space and kids likely have toys at home.

Excessive shoes: Plan your activities and choose shoes accordingly. You probably need 3 pairs maximum.

Packing Strategy

Use packing cubes: Organize by clothing type or by person. This saves space and keeps things organized.

Roll clothes: Saves space compared to folding.

Wear bulky items: Wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on travel days rather than packing them.

Pack light: You can buy most things. Start light.

Double-check: Before zipping the suitcase, confirm you have documents, medications, and chargers.

Arriving Without Everything

If you forget something: Buy it. Seriously. Don't stress about forgotten items. Convenience stores, pharmacies, and beach shops have everything.

If luggage is lost: Get replacement items at your destination while waiting for luggage to arrive.

If something doesn't fit: Leave it behind or mail it home.

Beach Vacation Packing Reality

You will probably overpack. That's okay. You'll also discover you don't need half of what you brought. That's information for next time.

Focus on documents, medications, and essentials. Everything else is negotiable. Your beach vacation success doesn't depend on having perfectly packed luggage. It depends on getting to the beach and having fun together.
