1. Search unclaimed property for any state using your favorite search engine.

If you are looking in the state of California for instance, enter “unclaimed property California.” The state comptroller’s website will have the data you are looking for.

2. Begin your search by name once you are in the state comptroller’s website.

Each state is different, but you typically must enter the person’s name and city of residence.

3. Review the search results.

Many names may be the same, but the address will uniquely identify the property to either yourself or possibly a deceased relative.

4. Download the form required by the state.

Enter the information in the form, print it and sign it.

5. Verify the amount.

If the amount is over a certain limit, you may need to have the form notarized.

6. Send the signed form along with a copy of your driver’s license and social security number.
