Personal ads are a great way to meet people who share your interests, to find your Mr. or Mrs. Right or just somebody to have a good time with. The first step to a successful connection is creating a well-written personal ad that honestly and specifically shows your personality in the best light.

Post a picture, if the ad is online, that is flattering but accurate. You want your picture to reflect you at your best, but avoid pictures that are so doctored or dated that you no longer resemble the photograph.

Focus your advertisement on your own characteristics and things that you enjoy instead of on what you want the other person to be like. Instead of giving a list of traits you are looking for in another, focus on who you are, what your values are and what you are looking for in life.

Be specific about your interests. For example, instead of saying "I enjoy books," say who your favorite authors are or what genre of books you like to read. Scan your ad for any vague information and provide specifics instead.

Avoid language that could be misinterpreted, such as sarcasm or irony. It's difficult to gauge the tone of written words, so avoid language that might seem harsh or insulting.

Describe what you want from life and what you want from a relationship. If you are interested in a serious relationship someday, say so. If you are interested in travel and in finding someone to do so with you, make this clear.

Revise and proofread your essay carefully to avoid errors. A poorly written ad reflects badly on you and might result in fewer responses.

Tips & Warnings

Provide a few pictures, if possible, instead of just one.
