Samoyed Training Guide
Many people feel the Samoyed is a difficult breed to train. What appears to some as a dumb dog is actually a very intelligent breed that simply wants the training to be done so he is having fun and being challenged.
You see, the Samoyed has long been used for sledding in the Artic so no matter where you live, this breed loves working toward a goal. Therefore, if you have a Samoyed, the key to successful training is creating a program specific to the breed.
How to Train Samoyed
For starters, we suggest you choose this breed if you are an outdoor enthusiast. If you love hiking, backpacking, running, or walking, then the Samoyed would make the ideal companion dog. The more he can do things with you the happier he will be.
Then, when you exercise the dog at home, find creative ways for him to feel challenged. For instance, some people will actually set up miniature obstacle courses or mushing tracks so the dog can pull a wagon or sled.
It is important with the breed that you not allow him to get away with behavior that you will not accept later. In other words, when you bring your puppy home from the breeder, start immediately in setting the rules.
Samoyed dogs are known for being great at manipulation. Therefore, while the adorable ball of white fluff is too cute, you need to make sure he understands that you are the boss, which can be done in a kind and loving way.
You also need to understand that like many breeds, the Samoyed does not respond well to harsh commands or training methods. Therefore, never yell at your dog or hit. Instead of punishing the negative behavior, start by rewarding positive behavior, which is typically done with favorite treats or praise after the dog has followed a command.
Generally, you will find the Samoyed picking up the command quickly. Now, you can use a firm voice and the word, “No” but this is quite different from yelling.
Another tip for training a Samoyed is to be aware of his vocalization. Most Samoyed dogs talk (bark) but you want to control the barking to the appropriate time. This is best served when young, prior to bad habits being established.
If your dog barks for no reason, look him in the eye while telling him “No” or “No bark”. If he barks at someone coming to the home, then you should allow the barking for a minute, followed by telling him not to bark. This way, he begins to understand that warnings are fine but extending barking is not. When he obeys, offer him a special treat to support the good behavior.
Although you can do much of the training of a Samoyed on your own, you may find that you become stuck with a particular command. In this case, consider having a professional trainer assist. Remember, the Samoyed is a medium breed but a powerful one. With proper training, you will own your dog and not the other way around.
Most importantly, be patient. This breed loves his family and is always eager to please. Therefore, with the appropriate training techniques, you will have a well-behaved dog that is a real joy to own.
