How to Lose Weight on Tae Bo

Tae Bo is an aerobics workout that combines the Korean martial art of tae kwon do with kickboxing, aerobics, yoga and dance. Billy Blanks, a martial arts master, created the workout concept in the mid-1980s.

The routines can take up to an hour, and they keep participants constantly moving to burn as many calories as possible. If you combine a vigorous Tae Bo workout with the proper diet, you can lose a significant amount of weight.

1. Determine how vigorous of a Tae Bo routine you want to do and how often you want to do it.

A full hour will burn 500 to 800 calories, while an abbreviated 15-minute session will burn 150 to 200 calories. Check with your doctor to find out how much is right for you and whether you should do it just a few times a week or every day.

2. Set a goal for how many calories you want to burn per day, based on how much Tae Bo you will be doing.

Determine how much you weigh now, how much you want to weigh and how quickly you want to lose that weight. Remember that you must burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound. Use the Self Nutrition Data daily needs calculator to determine how many calories your body already burns in a typical day, and set your calorie intake goals accordingly.

For example, if your body typically burns 2,000 calories per day and you are doing a full Tae Bo workout routine that burns an additional 700 calories every day for a total of 2,700 calories burned per day, you should only eat 2,200 calories per day so you are burning a net of 500 calories per day.

3. Begin the Tae Bo workout routine.

Beyond burning calories, Tae Bo will also give you a cardiovascular workout that strengthens your heart and helps you become more flexible. If you find you are quickly burned out by the exercises, start slowly with 15-minute sessions and gradually build up to the point that you can do a full Tae Bo workout.

4. Abide by a nutritious diet plan that factors in not just your caloric intake goals, but one that also gives you enough vitamins and minerals to stay in top shape.

Eat plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables, and make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet through beans or lean meats. Eat foods with low fat and cholesterol content.
